At a glance of Mymensingh Forest Department

Mymensingh Forest Department is a forest department rich in traditional gazari (shawl) of Bangladesh. In 1950, two separate forest divisions were established by separating the Dhaka and Mymensingh forest divisions. In the greater Mymensingh district, forest management of Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Kishoreganj and Netrokona districts is being managed by Mymensingh Forest Department. The total forest area in this forest department is 61,26.21 acres.

All these forests were the property of the then zamindars. With the abolition of zamindari system, the forest land was acquired and handed over to the forest department for scientific management. Later, the government decided to create a forest reserve for all these forests and issued a gazette notification.

The special feature of this forest is the natural sal forest surrounded by Kanda and Tila. At present, forest management is being done under social forestry by identifying degraded forest lands and involving forest dependent people in order to alleviate poverty. An ecotourism spot has been set up at Bhaluka Range, Kadigarh National Park and Santoshpur in Rasulpur Range under the Forest Division to preserve the biodiversity and eco-tourism with a focus on natural beauty.

At present, dividends are being distributed to the beneficiaries involved in the creation of forest gardens, extraction of forest resources and afforestation under various development projects of the Forest Department for the management of forests and forest lands.
